„Minors are for Ever“ 60 years Celebrating

The British „MORRIS MINOR OWNERS CLUB" invited enthusiasts to its birthday party. Of course I was also at the Golden Jubilee 10 years ago in Blenheim Palace. This time the event was a bit closer - in Stanford Hall; near Lutterworth in Leicestershire and I took my son along for company. You could ask yourself whether a trip of 850 km was too far for our 40 year old Minor - but 40 years ago the owner wouldn't have had such worries. Why? Well, because he owned a quite normal and reliable family car. And today the car is still just as reliable if one carries out the normal service and inspection programme. In fact we didn't hear of a breakdown amongst any of the participants. All the cars arrived safely; the only exception was a Morris Oxford which had an unexpected pit-stop on the London Circular, due to fuel starvation (or he ran out of petrol!!). [go on]

There are no translations available. Das Deutsche „British Classic Cars Magazin" bringt regelmäßig Berichte über britische Jungtimer oder auch Neuwagen und deren Chancen einmal Classic Car zu werden. Bei dem Bericht über den Aston Martin V8 Vantage (Heft 3/2008) erkennt man schnell, dass dieser schon jetzt ein Klassiker ist. Die Britische „Practical Classics" hat in ihrem letzten Heft eine vergleichende Statistik abgebildet, in der die Aussichten auf Wertsteigerungen bei Austin A35, Ford Pefect 107E und Morris Minor aufgezeigt werden. Danach hat sich der Wert des Minors in den letzten 12 Jahren fast verdoppelt. Austin und Ford schneiden da deutlich schlechter ab.

Der Ginnesbuch - Weltrekordversuch, „Das größte rollende Automobil-Museum der Welt" mit Oldtimern aller Marken auf dem Hockenheim-Ring zu bilden, ist leider zum dritten Mal gescheiterten. Möglicherweise hatte ja der Versuch mit „The Lotus World Record" mehr Erfolg. Wir wissen es leider noch nicht. Die Idee war: "more than 313 Lotus must drive 1 lap" auf dem Hockenheim-Ring

Isle of Man: Tourist Trophy

There are no translations available. Der Termin „MANX Grand Prix Isle of Man" hat uns neugierig gemacht auf die Isle of Man. Bei „Go Britain" wurden wir fündig. Die Tourist Trophy (TT) bezeichnet das seit 1907 auf der Isle of Man stattfindende Motorradrennen. Dieses findet nicht auf einem speziellen Rundkurs statt, sondern auf normalen Straßen, welche natürlich während Training und Rennen abgesperrt werden. Start und Ziel ist in Douglas. Die 60,72 km lange Strecke stellt wie kein anderes Rennen Anforderungen an Mensch und Material. Es ist nahezu unmöglich, sich jede Kurve und damit verbunden alle Bremspunkte zu merken. Beim Rennen gibt es kein gemeinsames Starterfeld, sondern die Kontrahenten starten zeitversetzt. Die Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit beträgt dabei ca. 200 km/h. Fast jedes Jahr kommt es zu tödlichen Unfällen. Sturzräume und -auffangbereiche sind spärlich bis gar nicht vorhanden. Die Teilnehmer bewegen sich auf dem Asphalt zwischen Steinwänden und Böschungen. Auch Kuppen, wie etwa bei Brücken, sind kaum entschärft bzw. erst in späten Jahren nivelliert worden.

Restauration einer NORTON ES2

Addendum: yesterday, 16 Mar 08, the beauty got delivered. On the attached photo the "mech" Zumach is sitting on the bike whilst the proud owner checks every detail. The ES2 started immediately - very much to the dismay of the neighbours, whose luch-time skip got abruptly terminated. It is not known yet when the ES2 will partake in the first event, however, you will be the first to know. Obviously many British Classic Car & Bike owners are being attracted by the UK. In order to make the search for good and affordable addresses on the island easier, we have created the rubric (Travel & Event) on the internet site www.british-classsic.eu Tim Bennett from Travelling Britain GmbH organises tours to the UK and he has also got some good hotel addresses on the Isle of Man. A perfect contact for our internet site. Normally we're only sending letters or e-mails to inform potential members. Herr Bennett lives near my patch and I decided to visit him. On that occasion I managed to convince him of the good idea of our internet site. We talked about all the world and his brother and eventually about my Norton ES2. Before I knew what was happening, we were in his garage and there she was, HIS ES2. A proper racing version (not a café racer) with clear signs of wear and tear from the use in the MANX Grand Prix races on the Isle of Man.
