We have had a great deal of positive feedback on the articles about the 123ignition
d123-rover-v8.jpgistributor (123ignition. The fantastic distributor  for fantastic classic cars (Der fantastische Zündverteiler für fantastische Oldtimer.) and in British Classic Cars Magazin (3/2008)).im-minor-800.jpgOf course for some enthusiasts the price of circa €300 was a sticking point. The alternative solution of using a well looked after mini distributor is good, cheap and generally provides a satisfactory solution. The much more traditional option of using an overhauled original part was still much cheaper than the 123ignition offer. Changing the driveshaft bearing is not a problem technically. It is also possible to re-machine the flywheels and other parts suffering from wear. You will of course, have agreed a fixed price with the workshops. But are you aware of the current labour rates? For a price of € 250 you will get 2-3 hours labour. Higher quality mechanics cost more and charges will approaches the cost of a 123ignition distributor making this solution much more attractive. 123bo6.jpg
I believe that the main technical problem with the spark train is the flywheel springs. Time and high environmental temperatures will mean that the flywheel springs performance characteristics will change. Replacing the distributor means new timing characteristics. It is of course possible to manufacture a spring optically identical to the original. However it is practically impossible to make one with exactly the same timing characteristics for your engine. The spring´s characteristics are dependent, on not only the dimensions and number of turns, but also on the mechanical properties of the metal used to form it. Another annoying fact is that most engines run much more smoothly and are quieter after they are reconditioned, their carburetors are replaced, they are tuned, the exhaust replaced or the timing adjusted. Another point to consider is that most repair shops federn.jpgwill not have the appropriate springs in stock. It is possible to with a 123ignition distributor to choose between 16 different timing settings. I recommend an initial position number 4 for most 1100cc A-engines, which will suit the average driver. However, if you want to increase performance for a sportier drive then you will have to experiment with the other positions. You will not get this flexibility with a reconditioned or modified original distributor. If, however, maintaining the originality of the engine is important to you, you can have your original part modified by „Brits'n'Pieces". There is no better solution and in this case, certainly, it makes no sense to scrimp and save. "Brits'n'Pieces " does not only sell parts. They provides a comprehensive advice service that is qualified and competent. Mr. Frenken also offers a "roadshow" service to Classic car clubs, where he will give a presentation. But not just that - we are here to help and to provide value for money!
