New rust inhibitor tests in the German "Oldtimer Markt" Classic Car Magazine
fertig

Rust-proofing is naturally an immensely important subjectfor classic car owners. Its been many years since the German "Oldtimer Markt" magazine reported in it's first issue about the "rustiest hobby in the world". British Classic Cars, in the June 2002 issue, reported in detail about this same theme. You'll find this article on the website under the title" Mike Sanders - The grease can". 3500 site visitors have already read it. The German magazine "Auto Bild = Car Picture" has also tackled the issue with the University of Oldenburg They have, through a long term test, attempted to separate the wheat from the chaff, in terms of rust and rust-proofing. Classic Index is the only place where you can view the full results (published in edition 10/2002) from the AUTO BILD magazine tests.

The MIKE' SANDER and „Gerd Mönnich GmbH & Co.KG" Sigafett products have been familiar to classic car entusiasts in Germany since these articles. In the September 2009 edition of "Oldtimer Markt" the results of new tests will be published. These tests are similar and in some respects more realistic than the AUTO BILD ones were. The products have been greatly developed since 2002 from my own personal experience, however, the performance is much the same as 2002.

There is of course, according to the test results, a new market leader, namely TimeMax. In our opinion, however, the top 7 products are all winners. Mike Sanders achieved 2nd place, with Sigafett from Mönnich / Hohlraumprofis in third place. The decisive factor, we believe is that the top 7 products are all based on Kriechfett (Creep Fat).
oltimer-markt-berichtThe photos in the test report show lightly rusted but otherwise clinically clean test beds. In reality one can expect to find holes, covered by flaking rust. One will also see seams, patchwork or point welds, where rust has already started to take hold. The deciding factor in the first 7 products is that, when thumb_markt-bild-breitwarm, the grease will penetrate rusted areas and overlapping seams, thus preventing the ingress of damp. This actively prevents new rust forming. You will find more details in the article "The grease can".

Of course the quality of application is as important as the quality of the rust-proofer itself. Most reputable restoration firms use the Sanders Grease Gun, as can be seen in the photos. The "Mönnich", "HODT" and "Die Hohlraumprofis" products can also be applied with this tool.
In addition to the rust-proofing material and the equipment for its application, the users' expertise is also very important. Variations in the quality of work will greatly influence the quality of the end product.
For example it is important to achieve a working temperature of around 100 Celsius to have effective spray conditions. A grease layer thickness of one centimetre or greater, as seen in the photos is unrealistic.

A thinner more evenly spread layer is not only more cost effective, it is a stress-buster. You will not have problem on warm days, of seeing excess grease exuding from panels and doors! This can cause a myriad of problems in itself. However you can find tips in the report. We decided to carry out our own assessment. Of course we could not test every firm, but we selected a few "Rost protection " „The grease can".

This time we went to „Die Hohlraumprofis"-company in Bockhorn. The workshop itself gavea good first impression. The employees appeared very professional and competent. The tools and equipment were modern, well maintained and suited to the task. These factors were telling in the quality of work that we found. It was a first for me to see the hollow areas in panels through an endoscope, before the treatment was done. This provided a complete picture of the MG TD, including the rust whereas the normal photographs gave the impression of perfect condition.

This, according to Mr. Janssen of „Die Hohlraumprofis" -company was not a case for worry. A light layer of rust would allow the material to bind better with the metal in the panels and reach the most important areas. This proved that regular checks are necessary. The endoscope makes the inspection of the inside of panels possible. A perfect looking exterior does not guarantee that the vehicle is rotting from the inside outwards! Under the link "Rust-Proofing" you will find useful contact details for your questions. It's not just we who are pleased to help!

The first photo shows a Morris Minor van, bought in 1983, that has been resored and rust-proofed by Mönnich. In 2006 it was restored again. Thanks to Sigafett, no panels had to be renewed or repaired and no welding at all was needed. The second photo shows the left side sill and panel covers.

The grease exuded though all the cracks and gaps to the sill cover. The extruded dirt allows the effectiveness of the grease to be photographed.
We still need to discuss the catalytic rust protection system "CAT" supplied by Ruststopshop.com". In this method, a cathodic rust protection is applied using electricity.
The galvanising rust process is reversed and therefore the risk of rusting is reduced. We were sceptical. A number of years ago Rolls Royce discovered that a positive earth (a system that was used extensively in England) actually accelerated corrosion. After that, all British manufacturers changed their electrical systems to negative earth. We are still collecting details and will provide more concrete information in due course.
