fettdose_1Classic Car friends are supposed to have the rustiest hobby of the world. Instead we only try to protect "our" vehicles from the ravages of time. What will the complete restoration of a car be of use, when it is not substantially protected against corrosion? Rust is on steel alloys a chemical reaction of water and air (chemical oxidation).

There is the possibility of active protection of corrosion, for example rust-proof steel (see De Lorian) or passive rust protection, for example a galvanic surface, coating and lacquering. When you restore Classic Cars the protection of the visible area is not the problem. The problems are cavities, for example at closed framework profile in the area of the sill board and overlapping sheet metal contours.

Even here a galvanic treatment does not protect - the opposite is the fact! Because of the pre-treatment with acid, the process of the oxidation will even be supported in the covered area. When you paint, it almost is the same. We are indeed able to remove the rust with the known instruments, to grind new laminations and protect the cover with an optimal paint, but only from the outside.
A lot of specialists and a lot of hobby-restorers, who have more or less technical experience, have themselves occupied with this problem.
Very significant is the published endurance test in the "Auto Bild" (Number 10 from 8th March, 2002) about 20 different liquids of rust protection.

The test fits exactly to our problem! Not several samples of sheet metal have been checked, but special test boxes, with sealed inside profiles and water run holes.

The subjects had been put for three years in the outdoor weathering in Oldenburg. In winter there had been sprayed ca. 4%- pickle into the boxes.

In the test only one liquid had performed with "exemplary", two liquids had been "good" and the rest only performed with "satisfactory" or "unsatisfactory".

The exemplary liquid (first place) was a corrosion-protection grease of the company Michael Sander (phone +4941262095). "Good" were the Sigafett (second place 2) of the company Gerd Monnich (phone +494454577) and the Terroson HV 400 (third place) of the company Henkel Terroson GmbH (phone +498992681169)
